Wyn's Story Behind Mentorship

Growing up with BPI | ERBS PALSY, even though it wasn't as widely known and I couldn't directly relate to many people at the time, my Mentors left huge impacts on my life. They did so in various positive ways, beyond just dealing with my disability. They've helped me through getting bullied and teaching me the importance of standing up for myself, helping me to boost my self-confidence | self-esteem | self-image, encouraging me to try my very best, just listening to how my day went, cracking jokes to make me smile and more! I've had many different Mentors in my life and the strongest impacts were determined by the ones who had a deep passion for the work they do with others. The difference definitely showed between those Mentors & the ones who were just in it for the money.

Sometimes, especially children & youth just need someone else to talk to aside from their family or friends, which is totally fine! They may want to talk to someone who is closer in age, who has relatable experiences in a safe space to express their feelings or what is on their minds with confidentiality. Those Mentors of mine, who shared some of their relatable stories helped me to feel even more comfortable in sharing mines. They felt more like older sisters and brothers to me, which was very excellent because I am the oldest child.

I may not be a Social Worker or Child & Youth Care Worker, but I, Wynnikka Matthews always had a passion for mentoring others and helping in the best way that I can! I do so with both a sympathetic and empathetic listening ear, with encouragement as well as helping to boost self-confidence and self-esteem, giving positive affirmations, teaching the importance of self-advocacy and much more! I've learned from my own experiences as well as watching how impactful my best Mentors were on my life and others' lives!

I mostly have experience with mentoring children & youth aged from 10-29 years old. My experience comes from volunteering and working in the Community Service sector and with Youth-Based initiatives for several years. I've been involved in many programs where I ran workshops with youth and Mentored them for that time period in groups. I personally love doing this because while they are being mentored and learning from me, I learn and grow from them as well as a Mentor!

The Mentors that I STILL keep in touch with, who have watched me grow into the inspiring young woman that I am today, can attest to that. I want the highlight the keyword "STILL" because some of the Mentors that I had when I was younger are STILL my Mentors today and are continuing to make an impact on my life! They still call or text to check up on me and they never hesitate to let me know if they come across opportunities they feel I should take on or other people they feel that I should get in touch with!

These are some of the major reasons why I have a deep passion for helping others now and seeing how much my Mentoring helps others makes me want to continue wanting to help others!
